Questions

Before you ask.

+How much does a lesson cost?
A one-off 60-minute private lesson is {{ oneOff }}. The 10-week programme is {{ programme }} for 10 hours — {{ perHour }} per hour, saving {{ saving }} against ten one-off lessons. The 20-week mentorship is {{ mentorship }}. There are {{ slotsLeft }} places left on the programme.
+Do you coach children, and are you DBS checked?
Yes to both. I coach juniors from about seven, and I hold an enhanced DBS certificate I'm happy to send before a first lesson. Parents can sit in on any lesson and get a short plain-English note afterwards: what we covered, what went well, and the one thing to practise next.
+How do scheduling and cancellations work?
Zoom or Google Meet, with Chess.com or Lichess — whichever you already use. I teach worldwide, and most slots suit UK, European and Indian evenings. Reschedule free with at least 24 hours' notice; inside 24 hours the lesson normally counts as taken.
+What rating do I need to work with you?
None in particular. I coach complete beginners through to strong club players. What matters more than rating is that you play often enough for us to have games to look at.
+What actually happens in a lesson?
We share a board and go through your recent games, which I've already annotated. I show you the moments that decided the game, we work through the ideas you missed, and you leave with one specific thing to practise. No lectures, no slides.
+How quickly will I improve?
I won't promise a number. Students who play regularly and do the homework usually notice their results shifting within six to eight weeks — which is why the programme is ten weeks rather than four. If you can't give the game any time between lessons, coaching won't do much for you and I'll say so.
